Artist Bio and Statement
Hi, my name is Roger Zheng and I am an illustrator/webcomic artist. I have a passion for crafting dynamic characters, intricate fight scenes, and morally complex worlds in an anime-inspired aesthetic. My work is heavily influenced by my love for fantasy, MMA, and Dungeons and Dragons, combining the world of knights and magic with martial arts to create some pretty crazy combat encounters! I have a BFA in Graphic Design from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and I have worked on other comic/illustration projects like “BB & Mo.”
Gold and Glory is a very personal project - one I’ve been working on for as long as I can remember.
I’m someone who really lives inside my head, and it can be hard to connect with a lot of the people around me. I’ve always thought a little differently; the way I experience emotion and logic doesn’t always align with the norm, which makes it hard to feel understood. Kids, especially, tend to pick on anyone who stands out, but instead of buckling under the pressure, I channeled it. I kept building this inner world until I was ready to share it.
The protagonist, Anton, is a bit of a self-insert and a reflection of what it felt like to be the outcast. He’s the only Ranger who refuses to give in to corruption, and the others mock him for it. He represents the persona or how hard I try to seem “normal” in everyday life.
Eralil, by contrast, represents the darker side of me - ego, control, and domination. The part that unsettles others: the sharp perception, the quick read of a room, the unfeeling mask that sometimes intimidates people.
The story is character-driven because it has to be. Each person represents a different part of me.
